Overcome to shine brighter than before!

Dr. Timothy C. Birdsall, ND, FABNO

ND (Naturopathic Doctor)
FABNO (Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology)

I consider myself first and foremost a teacher. One of the foundational principles of Naturopathic Medicine is “Docere”, which translates into “Doctor as Teacher.” My favorite part of patient care, beyond helping my patients get better, is to help them better understand the biology of their disease and the science behind their conventional and natural therapeutic options. I am committed to translating medicine and science into easily understood concepts, as I believe that patients are empowered through education, and can make the best decisions for themselves when they fully understand their health condition and treatment options.

I am passionate about really listening to my patients. There are many layers and complexities to what is going on with an individual that is diagnosed with a chronic disease. In my opinion, it is critical to understand everything I can about that person, including their lifestyle, stressors, diet, and overall health. Too often, a diagnosis is quickly made, and treatment recommended, without necessarily understanding what is right for that individualEach of us has unique health history and genetic profile as well as our own distinctive metabolism, which requires individualized, personalized approaches to care. I see myself as a detective, uncovering the clues that will lead to the most effective therapeutic strategies for each individual person. It is also critical to partner with my patients, to hear their feedback as to what works for them and what does not, so that their overall plan can be customized to their preferences and lifestyle.

I have had the privilege of having a varied and diverse career history, in addition to providing patient care. I served as Vice-President of Integrative Medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), with programmatic responsibility for nutrition, naturopathic medicine, mind body medicine, pastoral care, oncology rehabilitation, chiropractic, and acupuncture. I provided patient care as a member of the Department of Naturopathic Medicine at CTCA for twenty years. I had the honor of helping to pioneer an innovative, interdisciplinary, team-based approach to cancer care, the first of its kind to fully incorporate naturopathic physicians into the care of every patient in a hospital-based environment.

I have had the opportunity to present at medical conferences worldwide, and have presented testimony before numerous state legislatures, regulatory boards and governmental panels such as the Institute of Medicine and the National Institute of Health graduated from naturopathic medical school at Bastyr University in Seattle in 1985, where subsequently served on the teaching faculty for five years.  I am also active in numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), where I served as a member of the board of directors, Speaker of the House of Delegates and Vice President.  I currently serve as chair of the board of medical examiners of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology, and am a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO).

I was the founding editor-in-chief of the medical journal Alternative Medicine Reviewand in 2007, was appointed to serve on the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2000, I was given the honor of being the recipient of the President’s Award of the AANP, and in 2009 was named Physician of the Year by the AANP. I was also the recipient of the President’s Award of the OncANP in 2010.

As a clinical researcher, I am the holder of one U. S. Patentand since 2006 have been an author on over 20 abstracts accepted at major medical meetings, including the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the Society for Integrative Oncology, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

All these experiences have informed my thinking about medicine, science, patient care and healthcare in general. They have shaped the naturopathic doctor I am today, and I take great joy in providing relief to patients that are struggling with health conditions that they have not yet found the right answers for.

On a personal note, I am happily married to Dr. Shauna Birdsall. I enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren, as well as hiking and biking in the great outdoors of Nashville, Tennessee.
