Our Team
Overcome to shine brighter than before!
Dr. Shauna Birdsall, ND, FABNO
ND (Naturopathic Doctor)
FABNO (Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology)
I am passionate about helping people with challenging health conditions fully understand their disease, navigate their integrative care options, and improve their quality of life. I have a deep-seated respect for conventional medicine and strive to bridge the gap for patients between conventional and natural forms of medicine. I believe that many patients are best served by a team of providers, each with their own area of expertise. My approach to care places a high value on educating my patients and partnering with them to find the lifestyle and nutrition strategies, as well as scientifically backed natural therapies and supplements, that will work best for them.
The focus of my hospital-based residency was on integrative oncology. I had the opportunity to learn from medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, as well as other many other specialists. Besides training in integrative care for both hospital inpatients and outpatients, my residency was focused on cancer and cancer treatment, as well as evidenced-based natural therapies to support patients undergoing conventional cancer care. Patients diagnosed with cancer frequently have the same health conditions that are common in our society, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and autoimmune conditions. My residency included broad training and experience in general integrative care for these conditions as well.
I have spent nearly 20 years of my career working as a naturopathic doctor in a hospital-based setting, working side by side with conventional medical providers, ensuring patients are supported with integrative therapies during their cancer journey. After noticing for years that patients were often exhausted by seeing multiple providers, as well as by going through tests and receiving treatment, I made the decision to transfer my practice to a virtual model, where I can deliver consultations to patients in the comfort of their own homes, with family or friends, if they wish to include them. Virtual care alleviates the burdens of travel, as well as more easily includes caregivers who also want to participate in the visit. Virtual visits allow everyone to hear the same information, ask questions, and equip themselves with a plan and resources to support their loved ones with cancer.
Since my cancer patients have asked for years if I can help their friends and families with their non-cancer health conditions, I expanded my practice to offer general integrative care as well. Resilience Health was founded to inclusively welcome all patients with any health concerns. In approaching patients from a whole-person perspective, I partner with my patients to develop strategies to optimize their health and well-being. I am committed to offering my patients the latest scientifically backed natural therapies, nutrition, and lifestyle recommendations to strengthen their health resilience and improve their quality of life, no matter what diagnosis they are faced with.
On a personal note, I am happily married to Dr. Tim Birdsall, and have stepchildren and grandchildren. We live in Nashville, Tennessee, and you will often find us exploring the beautiful parks and forests in the area with our Bernese Mountain dog or indulging my other passion – cooking! I love to create new recipes with fresh produce I find at the farmer’s markets, and it is my personal obsession to make dishes that are both healthy and delicious.
