What is Naturopathic Medicine? How is it different from Functional Medicine, Alternative Medicine, or Holistic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health using natural therapies that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods. Functional Medicine is very similar to Naturopathic Medicine. Functional Medicine practitioners are trained to find the root causes of disease and employ diet changes, lifestyle recommendations and natural products to improve health and wellness. Functional Medicine providers are often medical doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants that have gone through additional training on Functional Medicine, although many naturopathic doctors also practice functional medicine.
Alternative Medicine means using natural therapies instead of conventional medicine. Alternative medicine may be safe to try for a low risk condition (for example, difficulty sleeping) but can be risky for health conditions that have higher risk if not effectively treated , such as cancer. Naturopathic Medicine takes an integrative approach, working with patients to use natural therapies in addition to conventional approaches, to include the best of both worlds.
Holistic Medicine could include any of the above but is meant to take a whole person approach to healthcare.
What can I expect from my first consultation?
During an initial visit, plan to spend 45 minutes to one hour going through your health history, including your current health concerns and symptoms, past and previous medical conditions, what you have tried in the past and are currently doing to address your health concerns, current medications and supplements, your daily diet, energy level, the amount and quality of your sleep, whether you are active and/or exercise, your stressors, and your lifestyle. We will review any current lab results you have and discuss labs that will be important to consider. Your initial questions will be answered and a plan to move forward will be discussed, including diet, lifestyle, and supplement recommendations.
Are you covered by insurance?
Naturopathic doctors are not yet covered universally by insurance. To provide you with adequate time and personalized care, the initial consultation and follow-up visits are cash only. This allows us to spend the time we need to uncover the underlying issues affecting your health and for you to receive a well-researched individualized plan that will provide lasting changes and optimal health.
What are your fees?
We offer a complimentary 15-20 minute consultation to any new patient to help you understand if naturopathic care is right for you.
